Descendant is one of the most underrated things in astrology. The opposite end of ascendant-descendant axis ought to be as important as its eastern end. However, ascendant is often called one of the big three and descendant hardly ever mentioned. Professional astrologers do admit descendant has role information of ascendant and more, but instead of elaborating on it, just move on.
If ascendant is how others see you, then descendant is how you see others.
Sure, other people have their own ascendants and natal chart that reflect who they are. However, these matter for them in their own internal world, and we often just oversimplify them into a few stereotypes. Other people are many and we often do not have time or desire to bother with getting to know most of them. Thus, we tend to oversimplify and stereotype, often subsuming others to a few simple stereotypes.
It works in reverse too, you are a complex human being with great ideas, knowledge and such, but other people just assume you to be another Pisces just because their descendant is in Pisces and they see everyone as just another Pisces. Yes, people are that shallow.
Descendant is how we see other people collectively and what we assume them to be when we fill the gaps in what we know about them. Just like ascendant, descendant is formed in early childhood. However, unlike ascendant, descendant is mostly based on personal observation of family members, relatives, friends, classmates and other people one had contact in early childhood and teenage. Behavior of these people will gradually be subsumed into a set of stereotypes. Later in life one will extrapolate these stereotypes on other people they will meet over the course of life. This extrapolation is just as reflexive and product of habit as habits and traits of the ascendant, often made subconsciously and without clear awareness.
Placement of the descendant shows, what stereotypes about others one tends to assume. Just like ascendant's placement reflect the type of upbringing one had in the childhood.
Ascendant and Descendant form an axis together, that means Descendant will always be in the opposite sign from the ascendant. Many of the ascendant qualities would be the opposite to that of descendant. That is because Ascendant is formed to both protect from qualities of descendant as well as to compensate for its shortcomings.
In many ways descendant limits what you can notice about the world. Human mind better responds to things it can understand while ignoring things that we cannot easily understand. Descendant will over and over pull you towards people with qualities of the sign it is pointing at.
That by no means guarantee you will be able to get along with these people and your involvement with them will be beneficial to you. Just like with ascendant, superficial first impression more often than not misleads rather than confuses. It can signify initial attraction or interest, but fundamentally its Sun and Moon that determine who you can really get along with. Unless Descendant makes good aspects to either Sun or Moon, one should not assume, the initial attraction will guarantee good relationship.
That is not all, descendant can also limit what you can reach in the outside world. By limiting your view of other people to its traits, descendant can prevent you from noticing someone who can be very beneficial to you, but whom you are unable to notice and understand due to limitations of your descendant. Descendant makes you oblivious to many alternative ways of life that are too different from what you got used in childhood.
That makes fighting against limitations of descendant as important as to limitations of ascendant. Transcending the limited worldview, left behind by parents and educators, could be one's ticket to success in life.
Descendant is a set of stereotypes through which one see outside world and other people. Be it rose colored glasses or gray colored glasses; it distorts and limits your and other people's view on reality.
