Virgo completes the first half of the year and first half of the zodiac. That does reflect Virgo's role in the society. Virgos see various works to their completion and polish things to perfection.
In agricultural world it is finally time for harvest. Crops have to be cut down, collected, stored, and sent for processing. A work that requires careful handling, attention to details and dedication. Traits Virgos do possess.
Virgos are workers, craftsmen and servants. Their lives are dedicated to perfecting certain tasks and executing it. Remember how in Gemini article I called Gemini an inventor. Geminis create new ways of doing things. To complement them there are Virgos, who first learn craft, then polish their skills and finally practice it. Trade, that once was Gemini's area of activity later became that of Virgo. As practices and industries mature, they transform from an exciting ever changing start up to a polished and well-oiled operations often with no room for error. For an industry to evolve in such way, Geminis have to pass torch to Virgos. They often do so voluntarily, getting bored with the sameness their once passion projects have become.
Being good at any craft requires ability to learn, patience, attention to details and high tolerance to boredom. All qualities typical to Virgos. Many crafts are very methodical and require hours and hours of doing the same thing over and over again. Something like this can drive someone like Aries or even Gemini nigh insane. Virgos however could do it.
Virgo is a second sign that has a human representing it. In this case it is clearly a woman, a virgin one at that. While modern society likes to re-define woman's role, traditionally women were subordinated to men. This sign carries certain level of subordination to both rigors of the trade as well as demands of the outside world. The fact that Virgo is mutable, just like Gemini, only further adds to this. Virgos are not initiators but someone who acts in response of external forces. For example, as a craftsman, one has to wait until client places their orders and then work on them. Even in agriculture Virgos are those who wait until harvest time comes to finally fulfill their role.
Traditional astrology called Virgo an unfortunate or malefic sign, together with its 6th house. Compared to much flashier roles of the other signs, Virgo's role is unenviable one. Society as a system does like to praise and reward service. Monuments and accolades are dedicated to those who sacrificed for the community. On individual level however people simply enjoy benefits and conveniences Virgo's provide, without paying too much attention to those who do it all for them. Making Virgo's role all the sadder.
Roman pagan religion had a cult of Vestals, a selection of virgin women, who had to maintain the sacred flame. They were honored by society for performing their duties, but were forbidden to marry of have sex, so they remained virgins forever. There were severe punishments for breaking these rules. Virgo's role is akin to those Vestals. People with Sun in Virgo could find some fulfilment in such role. They are those who talk about things such as "finding meaning in suffering and sacrifice for community" and so on. If there is a work that no one wants to do, but it is essential for community, Sun in Virgo or possibly Pisces native is your only hope. They routinely volunteer to contribute to community.
Other planets in Virgo might give you some of the Virgo's abilities without sharing its mission. These skills can be useful in employment as a lot of work is Virgo-like in nature. Work in general is a Virgo's area of life. Virgos and corresponding 6th house represent work in natal chart. If Taurus is foundation, then Virgos are walls and pillars that hold the structure and allow it to function.
I personally do not have any planets in Virgo but have an Ascendant there. That made me feel like my parents and broader society often try to push a Virgo's role on me. I always resisted such attempts and gradually developed defensive and self-protective approach to society. It also pushed me into introversion.
When it comes to dating, Virgos are unfortunate here as well. Men are especially affected by this problem, as Virgo is feminine sign and its mutability only makes it worse. Virgo men possibly experience the biggest gap between desire to be in a relationship and ability to get into one. As an Earth sign, Virgo's desire for sex is high. Inability to find someone can lead to them developing all sort of psychological issues. The more they go without relationship, the more desperate they get. They might even put their lives in danger if they think it can help them win someone's approval. Virgo is one of the most typical clients of psychological counselling, leaving even Cancers and Pisces far behind. If Taurus think they, have it bad, they seen nothing yet.
For a woman Virgo is a mixed bag sign. On one hand Virgo is feminine enough and many men would appreciate a woman in a supportive role. On the other hand, Virgo is prone to certain level of self-sabotage by being overly critical and nitpicking on every small detail. Low self-esteem can drive Virgo females to altogether forgo the relationship and become a crazy cat lady instead. Virgos of both genders love cats.

Finally, about Virgo role in bigger picture of things. As I mentioned in the very beginning of this article, Virgos see things to their completion. Virgo is the last sign of the second trio. Cancer united people around themselves, Leo became their representative and leader, finally Virgo becomes the staffer for the various social structures and systems. Now we have not only a society but also actively building a state on top of it. Libra and Scorpio complete the structures of that state. However their role is administrative and regulatory, Virgo is the last sign that builds things.

Virgos are craftsmen and staffers and servants that work for the system and community. They are essential, but underappreciated members of society.
