Gemini in Astrology

Gemini is third and final sequence of beginning of the year stretch between the equinox and summer solstice (winter solstice in southern hemisphere). Aries begins the new year; Taurus works to build foundations, then Gemini comes to do final touches before handing it over to the next triad.

When crops sprout and grow sufficiently enough to not be in immediate danger of being eaten by rodents and birds or perish due to lack nutrients, a famer could finally take a break from the field and tend to other important issues. That was the time to travel to nearby town to buy new equipment, check on the neighbors and news, try something new and so on.

That is what Gemini's role in the zodiac and broadly speaking in society is. Gemini is a traveller, trader, journalist, writer, experimentator, engineer, early adopter, scientist even. Gemini can wear many hats, they are even depicted as two people, commonly called twins.

However, there is more to this symbolism, in most of their roles Gemini meets and interacts with other people. Other people bring news and ideas to and Geminis more than eager to hear them. In fact, so eager for new things they will seek out people to talk to and ideas to think of if there is nothing in their immediate surroundings. On a lower level this thirst for receiving and spreading information manifests in gossiping. People who gossip a lot likely have Ascendant, Mercury or Sun in Gemini.

One final part of Gemini's symbolism is that this sign is represented not by an animal, but by a human. Unlike the signs, represented by animals, signs represented by humans are more intellectual. They are further detached from instinct and emotions and trust their mind rather than emotions. They are the original inventors from whom others learn later.

Freud who claimed that ego and superego are just covers for the desires of id had Sun in Taurus. What Freud said can indeed be observed in other Tauri and to lesser extend in other signs represented by animals, but not all signs are like that, some are wired differently. I will cover other signs in their due time.

Gemini here is one who builds human civilization on top of the foundations laid by Taurus. To that end Gemini practices all the things that set humans apart from the animals. Doing these things, advance humanity to a new higher level of life.

Much unlike Taurus, Gemini could not stand status quo. Tradition means nothing to them and most of them cannot wait to throw old into trash for something newer and better. A balanced placement between these two signs can sometimes produce a measured attitude to both tradition and innovation.

Gemini is a typical early adopter of various technological innovation. Tech generally fascinates them, and they will never tire of endless kaleidoscope of innovation.

As much as they like to try new things, they also like to spread word of their experience, both to get more people try it but also to describe their experience using the thing. That will make them good reviewers. For example, very popular reviewer, Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw is Gemini. You might even call him a typical representative of this sign.

Broadly speaking Gemini like all sorts of new experiences. They will try near anything at least once, just to know how it feels or works.

Gemini gets a lot of bad rep from many other astrologers. Geminis are called liars, fake, fickle and what not. Envy perhaps. Almost make me doubt if I should write about my own sign, Libra, to avoid full envy-geddon.

That said these accusations are not completely without grounds. Loyalty and dedication are not Gemini's strong points, if they get bored, they will move on and leave other hanging. Emotional intelligence is also alien to them, they say what they want to say no matter if that offends someone. Freedom of speech is their thing. All that can sometimes be mitigated by other planet placements: earth signs placements can give more loyalty and water sign placements will give emotional intelligence instead.

One should remember that while Gemini does have great intellectual ability, they can put it to both benign and evil use. They are the main targets for moralists to offer their moral compasses to. They are however not too vindicative to worry too much about their revenge. It is more trouble if they decide to cause problems out of boredom or because something you have piques their curiosity.

Workwise Geminis had a reasonable selection of areas that they can be happy with. Unfortunately for them, many of these gradually became more and more stall and bureaucratized for their liking.

Historically Gemini were traders. Travelling between different countries to visit markets with wildly different goods is something Gemini will enjoy. Modern trade however is far more prosaic with its endless paperwork and standards to uphold; so, it is more in the Virgo area of expertise.

Gemini can be engineer or a scientist too. Originally these professions were all about experiments and trying new things. Nowadays official veneer, paperwork and politics made these less appealing to inquisitive Geminis, but some roles in these areas still allow for curiosity to flourish.

There is also journalism and writing, Gemini Ernst Hemingway was both journalist and writer and managed to reach acclaim at both of these professions.

Finally, Gemini can enjoy something that involves travel. Unlike Aries they do not have to explore something previously undiscovered by humans. Geminis will be happy if the place is enjoyable and fun.

When it comes to dating, Gemini rarely have serious problems. They are not the most sought-after people, but more often than not will be able to figure out how to get someone they like. If that fails, they likely be able to move on without serious issues.

Generally, Gemini is masculine sign, but because its mutable, it works for women too. In terms of gender parity, it is one of the most equal signs.

In context of the broader astrological structures Gemini is last of the opening triad and has the last possible modality, mutable. The following Cancer is cardinal, like Aries.

Gemini is mutable. Mutable means it goes with the flow and let trends and experiences control them. Unlike fixed signs, that deeply rooted in their own views and way of doing things or cardinal that focused on their objectives and ambitions, mutable signs are more relaxed and flexible. They do not have clear destination in mind and let others drive events as they enjoy the ride. That said Gemini can easily hop off or switch vehicles if they do not enjoy the ride.

In context of relation between signs, mutable marks end of an era or a phase. Mutable signs pave way for a change in the next phase. Being last of three, Gemini paves the way for the next phase of life that will begin with solstice when Sun enters Cancer.

Gemini is also an Air sign, a quality it shares with Libra and Aquarius. Air signs are all represented by people or inanimate objects. They share common intellectualism and detachment from instinct and emotions. They like abstract ideas and technology.

Gemini is curious and creative sign that likes new things, technology and fresh experiences. They communicate ideas, make plans and engineer better life for all of us. Gemini can elevate humanity to higher levels of development or just keep you entertain with a conversation, providing you can follow their train of thoughts that is.
